            A new book: Genes Hearing and Deafness

         The field of generic hearing impairment is one where rapid advances are taking place, and it can often be difficult for Audiologists to keep track of the broader picture. Molecular biology and molecular genetics have made a key contribution to the understanding of the normal and defective inner ear, not only in congenital profound hearing impairment but also in late onset/progressive hearing impairment. In this important new text the authors take a synoptic approach and summarize the causes and basis of hearing impairments, the impact on the individual and the therapies available, and the benefits and potential benefits of current developments.

        This book provides a broad and up to date overview of genetic hearing impairment for audiologists, otorhinolaryngologists, pediatricians, and clinical geneticists, to improve the quality of care for the large group of patients who may be affected; all students and clinicians with an interest in this field will find it an easy to read sourcebook.

There have been some sort of alarm caused by the reported cases of meningitis complications in patients who have received a cochlear implant. In the Cochlear Implant section information (sorry for the moment only in Italian) you can find some clarifying information about meningitis and cochlear implants.
