In this section you can find the pages of the previous concerted Action HEAR and the Infoletters which were published in the period 1997-1999.

The pages of this section are intended as an information depository for material related to the GENDEAF activities, which can be used to facilitate communication between the GENDEAF research groups and the educational (students / educators) and hearing impaired communities (patients, families and their associations). The information depository will compliment the material presented in the bulletins page.

These guidelines are the result of work by a large group of different professionals, and are aimed to help different professionals in providing early identification of deafblindness. There are explanations of these guidelines in 6 languages.

The document for early idenitification of hearing loss is adopted from the Neonatal hearing screening (NHS) consensus report 2002 (Grandori, Hayes). The guidelines regarding the balance assessment were produced by the "vestibular group"2 of the EU project HEAR. Finally, the guidelines concerning vision are produced by SENSE3 and NDCS - by their approval they have been linked to this homepage. It is the hope of GENDAEF that these guidelines will be a useful tool.

In this section you can find downloadable material related to the activities of the Thematic Network plus other files of general interest such as medical glossaries in various languanges .

08-02-2002 Initial Meeting at Milano

14-3-2002 Dr. Michael B. Petersen is the director of the Institute of Child Health, Department of Genetics, Athens Greece and he is newest collborator of the GENDEAF project. He has sent us a short description of his activities.
"Greece has a high carrier frequency of 3.5% of the GJB2 35delG mutation. In a collaboration with the major referral centers for childhood deafness in Greece, we have determined that the GJB2 gene is responsible for about one third of prelingual, neurosensory, nonsyndromic deafness in our country. As deaf individuals often choose deaf partners and due to the high carrier frequency in the normal population, a pseudodominant inheritance pattern can be seen in GJB2 deafness. We have discovered a big need for genetic counseling, carrier testing and prenatal diagnosis of prelingual deafness in our country. The Institute of Child Health is the only public institution in Greece performing genetic counseling, clinical diagnosis of syndromic deafness, and molecular genetic diagnosis of nonsyndromic deafness".
